CCR-5 has been recently described in the literature as a monocyte cell surface protein with the capacity to act as a co-receptor for HIV-1. A specific 32 base pair deletion in the gene encoding CKR-5 has been demonstrated in 0.1% of Caucasians and 0.2% of African-Americans surveyed. Proported resistance to HIV infection has been suggested in association with the homozygous phenotype. Individuals who are heterozygous for the deletion may possess resistance to a lesser degree or may demonstrate a long-term non-progressive course of disease. Additional investigations are ongoing to more extensively define the cinical impact of CKR-5 modifications. Results should be interpreted accordingly in conjunction with clinical observations and the results of other established diagnostic procedures.
Analyte Specific Reagents (ASR) are used in many laboratory tests for standard medical care and generally do not require FDA approval. This test was developed and its performance charcteristics determined by USC Pathology Reference Laboratory.
