INTERPRETIVE DATA
CKR-5 has been recently described in the literature as a monocyte cell surface protein with the capacity to act as a co-receptor for HIV-1. A specific 32 base pair deletion in the gene encoding CKR-5 has been demonstrated in 0.1% of Caucasians and 0.2% of African Americans surveyed. Proported resistance to HIV infection has been suggested in association with the homozygous phenotype. Individuals who are heterozygous for the deletion may posses resistance to a lesser degree or may demonstrate a long-term non-progressive course of disease. Additional investigations are ongoing to more extensivelydefine the cinical impact of CKR-5 modifications. Results should be interpreted accordingly in conjunction with clinical observations and the results of other established diagnostic procedures.
