CYTOMEGALOVIRUS ANTIBODY, IgG

METHODOLOGY
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

PERFORMED
Tues, Fri

REPORTED
Same day

COLLECT
One 6 mL SST or CSF (Min: 4 mL SST)

TRANSPORT
1 mL serum or CSF, refrigerated (Min: 0.5 mL)

STABILITY
Refrigerated - 48 hours
Frozen - Stable

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS
Samples with high degree of hemolysis, lipemia or microbial growth.

REMARKS
Separate serum from cells ASAP.

REFERENCE RANGE
<0.91 ISR: Negative - no significant level of detectable CMV IgG antibody 0.91 - 1.09 ISR: Equivocal - repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.

>1.09 ISR Positive - lgG antibody to Cytomegalovirus detected which may indicate a current or previous CMV infection.

INTERPRETIVE DATA
ISR = Immune Status Ratio: Optical Density (OD) of the patient serum divided by the OD of the positive calibration value.

In immunocompromised patients, CMV serology (IgG or IgM antibody titers) may not be reliable and may be misleading in the diagnosis of acute or reactivation CMV disease. The preferred method for diagnosis is culture of virus and/or demonstration of viral antigen in peripheral white cells (buffy coat), bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells, or tissue biopsies.
