INTERPRETIVE DATA
c-erb B-2 (HER 2/neu) is an oncogene encoding a protein (MW 185,000) that shows major homology with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Studies performed using antibodies to HER 2/neu and EGFR yield similar results.

Over-expression and amplification of the HER 2/neu oncogene may be detected by positive immunohistochemical membranous staining and are associated with poorer prognosis. Absence of staining is considered a favorable prognostic indicator. Results of staining for EGFR have a similar significance.
